Series background & context

This series takes a zombie apocalypse premise and turns it into something much stranger, steamier, and more family-centered than the title first suggests. The early books begin after the dead have already taken over, when scientist Mikka is working in the middle of the crisis and discovers a new kind of zombie, stronger, faster, and partly human.

These zombies are not background monsters.

The big twist is that the central zombie men can move between human and undead forms, think clearly, bond deeply, and build lives of their own. That is what makes the first arc work. Mikka's connection to Thorn and his brothers pushes the story toward reverse-harem romance, but it also opens a larger question about whether this new branch of zombie existence could change the fate of the world. Babies, bloodlines, and survival all matter here.

As the series keeps going, it grows into a multigenerational saga. The focus shifts from Mikka and the original kings to younger royals and later couples, including princesses and princes trying to balance normal human life with the strange demands of zombie royalty. College settings, social media fame, family expectations, lingering threats, and supernatural abilities all start feeding into the later books.

What stays consistent is the sense that the apocalypse never fully goes away. Even when a book follows a new romance, the older danger is still there in the background. The family is always trying to protect its own, understand what their powers mean, and move the world closer to something stable. That gives the series more shape than a simple string of pairings.

It is weird, hot, and surprisingly soft in places.

If you come to this expecting straight horror, you will not get that. McCoy is much more interested in romance, mating, family bonds, and the emotional fallout of being different. The zombie setup gives her a fun, dark frame, but the real hook is watching one unusual family keep growing while the rest of the world tries to catch up with what they have become.
