Series background & context
The Zero Saga shows an earlier side of H. D. Carlton, before her work moved fully into contemporary dark romance. These books are dystopian science fiction with horror and romantic elements, set in a future where Earth is under threat from both alien invaders and a terrifying plague.
In Hollow, an alien species known as the Zolarians is being destroyed by parasitic insects that turn their victims into mindless, cannibalistic creatures nicknamed Hollows. The only hope for a cure lies beneath Earth's infamous military base at Area 51. Ronan, a hardened Zolarian commander, is ordered to travel to Earth, retrieve the cure, and clear the planet of humans so his people can claim it.
Zero Alvarado, the human heroine, has grown up hidden in tunnels under Area 51, training for the day something from the sky finally breaks through. When the invasion arrives, her worst fears become routine reality. Zero's clash with Ronan throws two enemies together in a landscape full of monsters, where attraction grows alongside distrust and each side must decide how far they will go to save their own.
The first book moves between frantic survival on the surface, political pressure within the alien ranks, and the slow dismantling of simple good versus evil. Carlton uses gore filled set pieces, claustrophobic bases, and shifting loyalties to push both Ronan and Zero into choices that blur the line between duty and cruelty. Their tentative bond becomes one of the few places either character can admit fear or tenderness.
Untainted raises the scale. Thousands of infected Hollows are transformed into engineered soldiers called the Untainted, and the remaining human population is shrinking fast. Ronan himself struggles with what the infection has done to him, while Zero juggles protecting civilians, guarding the rebel group known as the Revelance, and trying to pull Ronan back from becoming a weapon against his will.
To give humanity a chance, Zero seeks out Layna, a legendary scientist whose work might shift the balance of the war. Tracking Layna drags Zero far beyond Earth into brutal off-world territories, where combat trials and uneasy alliances are the only way to be heard. The romantic thread between Zero and Ronan deepens under that pressure, but so do questions about whether trust is really possible between a human and the commander sent to wipe out her species.
Readers coming from Carlton's later books will recognize the fast pacing, high body count, and attraction between damaged leads, but in a setting full of alien tech, ruined cities, and experimental horror. The two existing novels form a complete arc of invasion, resistance, and hard won connection, even as they leave the larger universe open for future stories if she ever returns to it.
