Author bio
W. T. Quick was born in Muncie, Indiana, in 1946, and grew up in Indiana. He became a science fiction writer at a time when personal computers and networks were beginning to reshape the way people imagined the future.
His route into fiction began with short stories. Quick published “Instructions Enclosed” in Analog in 1979, then followed it with “Rest in Pieces” in Asimov’s Science Fiction in 1980. Those early magazine stories gave him a foothold in the field before he moved into novels.
By the late 1980s, he was writing fast-moving stories about data, corporations, artificial intelligence, and people caught in systems much larger than themselves.
His first novel, Dreams of Flesh and Sand, arrived in 1988. It introduces Calley and Berg, former spouses with opposing talents in computer security, and drops them into a struggle involving corporate power and a mind living inside a computer network. Quick continued that story in Dreams of Gods and Men and Singularities, building a connected cyberpunk trilogy full of virtual spaces, dangerous technology, and divided loyalties.
The technology is never just background noise in these books.
Quick also wrote stand-alone science fiction. Yesterday’s Pawn follows a teenager drawn into a hunt across space and time after an artifact appears in his father’s pawnshop. In Systems, a former special-operations soldier working as a data hunter investigates the death of the woman he loved. Chains of Light, published under the name Quentin Thomas, centers on a young man raised as a prisoner by the computer that controls his world.
He was comfortable working under more than one name. Alongside Quentin Thomas, he used Sean Kiernan for the two Roar tie-in novels, set in a fantasy version of fifth-century Celtic Britain and Ireland. He also wrote as Margaret Allan, the name attached to the prehistoric adventures beginning with The Mammoth Stone. Those books move away from networks and spacecraft and into ancient North America, where communities, rituals, survival, and a powerful mammoth-ivory talisman shape the action.
That range is part of the fun of following Quick’s work.
His bibliography also includes Star Control: Interbellum, a novel connected to the space-game universe, and six Quest for Tomorrow novels written with William Shatner. Across the different settings, his characters often have to make practical choices under pressure, whether they are facing a hostile machine intelligence, an ancient prophecy, or a fight for survival.
Quick has written dozens of shorter works as well as screenplays for film and television. Away from fiction, he has also worked as a blogger. His novels remain a compact tour through late twentieth-century science fiction, especially for readers who like technology-driven suspense alongside stranger, more mythic adventures.
