She is not just investigating supernatural crimes. She is tied to the world behind them in ways she would rather escape.

The Thirteenth Sacrifice starts with murdered young women and an ancient symbol carved into their flesh. Samantha recognizes what it means, and that knowledge forces her back toward Salem, covens, and a past she has tried to leave behind. The series works because the cases are not random. They keep hitting the parts of Samantha she least wants to face.

The tone is thriller first, but with strong horror undertones. Salem is not used as cute witch-town scenery here. It becomes a place haunted by history, bad magic, and people hungry for power. That gives the books a heavier atmosphere than Viguie's lighter paranormal work.

Samantha is also a solid series lead because she is capable without being comfortable. She knows too much, carries old damage, and keeps getting dragged deeper into conflicts she hoped were over. The Last Grave and Circle of Blood push that personal arc harder as the larger threat closes in.

If you want supernatural suspense with real menace and a heroine who has skin in every fight, start with The Thirteenth Sacrifice. This one definitely rewards reading in order.
