Series background & context

Wishbone Mysteries combines the bookish dog's big imagination with kid-friendly detective stories. The setting is usually Oakdale, where Wishbone and his human friends encounter strange events, missing items, spooky rumors, and everyday problems that call for a closer look.

Brad Strickland's titles include The Tale of the Secret Mirror, The Tale of the Phantom School Bus, and The Tale of the Deadly Diary. Each book uses a mystery hook that is eerie enough to be fun without becoming too frightening for the intended audience.

Wishbone's literary imagination gives the stories an extra spark. He may cast himself in the role of a brave investigator or dramatic hero, but the clues in the real world still need to be followed. The young characters learn that a rumor is not evidence and that solving a problem often takes teamwork.

Even a school bus can look suspicious after dark.

These are quick, approachable mysteries for children who like a little suspense mixed with humor. They do not require deep knowledge of the television series or the literary references that sometimes inspire Wishbone's fantasies.

The books work well as stand-alone cases. Read in order if you want to follow the sequence, or choose the mystery that sounds most intriguing and let Wishbone lead the way.
