Author bio

William Kent Krueger was born in Torrington, Wyoming, and grew up in a family that moved often. By the time he finished high school, he had lived in six states and a long list of towns. The place that stayed with him most was Hood River, Oregon, in the Cascade Mountains, where many of his most important teenage memories were made.

The dream of writing stayed put even when everything else moved.

In 1969 he started at Stanford University, but the timing was turbulent. After joining a protest against the university's role in military weapons research during the Vietnam era, he lost his scholarship and left after his freshman year. The years that followed were practical and varied. He logged timber, worked construction, tried freelance journalism, and built a life with Diane, the woman he would marry.

Everything changed again in 1980, when he and Diane moved to St. Paul so she could attend law school. Krueger took a job researching child development at the University of Minnesota, and before the rest of the day began, he wrote. He got up early, headed to the St. Clair Broiler near his home, and filled cheap wire-bound notebooks longhand over coffee. Those quiet dawn sessions, done before work and family obligations crowded in, became the routine that finally turned the wish to write into a working life.

That long apprenticeship paid off with Iron Lake, the novel that introduced Cork O'Connor, the former sheriff of Aurora, Minnesota, who is part Irish and part Ojibwe. Readers came for the mystery, but many stayed for the setting, the moral knots, and the way Krueger lets family and community matter as much as the crime. Books like Boundary Waters, Mercy Falls, and Lightning Strike show how comfortably he moves between suspense, wilderness danger, and the private griefs people carry.

He is just as at home outside the series. Ordinary Grace, his 2013 standalone novel, won the Edgar Award for Best Novel and brought him a wider audience with its coming-of-age story set in small-town Minnesota. This Tender Land followed with a bigger historical canvas, sending four children downriver through Depression-era America. In The River We Remember, he returned to the small-town mystery again, this time with a postwar community full of old wounds and hard suspicions. Even the audio novella The Levee shows the same pull toward history, danger, and ordinary people under pressure.

A lot of Krueger's fiction circles the same human questions. What do we owe family. How do people live with guilt. What does grace look like when a community is frightened, divided, or grieving. His books often carry the feel of Minnesota itself, the lakes, woods, rivers, weather, and long memory of the land. They also return again and again to questions of identity, faith, Native history, and the cost of doing what seems right.

He still writes in the morning.

Now a full-time author, Krueger lives in St. Paul with Diane, a retired attorney, and he still prefers the first hours of the day. He has said that he spends those hours in a local coffee shop, bent over a notebook while the sun comes up. It is a simple routine, but it connects the writer he became to the boy who wanted, more than anything, to tell stories.
