Series background & context

Wicked Willful Highlanders is a medieval clan-feud series built on grudges, kidnappings, forced proximity, and people who tell themselves they are making practical choices right up until love ruins the plan. The books are connected by conflict between Highland families and by the strong personalities at the center of each romance. These are not quiet stories. They start with bold moves and then keep turning the pressure higher.

The first book, Highlanders Hold Grudges, opens with Alasdair MacRae kidnapping his enemy's daughter, Maeve MacKenzie, to force peace and save his starving clan. That tells you almost everything you need to know about the series' appetite for trouble. The practical logic may make sense in the moment, but the emotional consequences arrive immediately. Maeve has her own loyalties, her own attraction, and no intention of behaving like a useful pawn.

No one yields easily here.

Highlanders Never Surrender follows Cormac MacLean and Brigid Campbell through revenge, injury, rescue, and a steadily deepening alliance that neither planned on. Highlanders Never Forget turns to Alexander Gordon and Adeline Brodie, with ambition, betrayal, and forbidden attachment doing the damage. Across the trilogy, Johnstone keeps returning to the same satisfying tension. The heroes think duty or vengeance gives them a clear path. The heroines challenge that certainty at every turn.

The setting matters because these are not abstract feuds. Food, land, fortresses, inheritance, and the king's favor all shape what the characters can and cannot do. A marriage can end a war. A rescue can start one. A family grudge may be rooted in something practical, but it can harden into identity if no one is willing to look twice. That is where the romances get their energy.

If you want Highland books with a little more bite, and especially if you enjoy sharp-tongued heroines meeting equally stubborn warriors, Wicked Willful Highlanders is an easy series to recommend. It keeps the emotional payoff Johnstone readers expect, but it gets there through abductions, feuds, and the kind of love stories where surrender is the last thing either person wants to do, until it becomes the only thing that makes sense.
