Whiffy Newton in the Affair of the Fiendish Phantoms brings eerie disturbances into Dr Newton's laboratory and into Whiffy's family life, while Whiffy Newton in the Mystery of the Marble Beach Mugger strands the gang in a seaside town where even a holiday can't stay peaceful for long.

What links the books is their tone. They are silly in exactly the right way, but the mysteries are still proper mysteries. There are clues, suspects, false starts, and moments where Whiffy has to think harder than everyone expects. Lim keeps the stakes kid-sized enough for younger readers, yet real enough to make each case worth solving.

The series also does a nice job with the everyday stuff that matters to children. Bullies are a problem. Parents can be baffling. Clothes can feel like a public disaster. Holidays can go wrong. Adults miss things. Then Lim tips in something gloriously odd, like a suspicious new girlfriend, a haunted lab, a mad invention, or a community crisis built around fish and chips or trousers. The balance between the familiar and the ridiculous is what gives these books their charm.

If you're wondering what kind of reading experience this is, think quick chapters, playful language, and mysteries that are easy to slip into. Whiffy solves problems not by being glamorous or fearless, but by noticing details, sticking with his friends, and refusing to stop asking awkward questions. That makes him a very easy detective to root for.
