That body-hopping premise gives the series a lot of range. Each book can bring a new setting, a new crisis, and a new cast around Mercy, but the emotional thread stays consistent. She is always trying to piece together her own history, work out who is hunting her, and protect the people whose lives she has stepped into. The supernatural framework is big, but the books keep returning to very human things like grief, fear, illness, violence, and the need to be believed.

Nothing in this series stays small for long.

In Mercy, the story begins in the town of Paradise, where Mercy crosses paths with Ryan Daley, a boy still haunted by his sister's disappearance. That meeting becomes one of the series' anchors. Ryan is not just a love interest. He is Mercy's strongest connection to ordinary human life, and the person who keeps reminding her that saving one person can matter just as much as winning some vast celestial struggle. Exile shifts to Melbourne and into the life of Lela Neill, who is caring for her dying mother. Muse throws Mercy into Milan's fashion world when she wakes in the body of a troubled supermodel. Fury pushes the conflict into open war, and Wraith brings Gia Basso to the front as old bargains, old wounds, and Ryan's fate become impossible to ignore.

The long-running problem is twofold. Mercy wants the truth about her exile, and she wants the freedom to choose her own loyalties. Luc, the angel who reaches her in dreams and claims to love her, is central to both questions. So are the archangels and demons circling the edges of the story. Lim does not write angels as soft-focus comfort figures. In these books they are powerful, political, wounded, and often frightening.

Tone matters a lot here. This is paranormal romance, but it is also crime fiction, mystery, and thriller. There are kidnappings, stalkers, missing people, supernatural vendettas, and cliff-edge choices. At the same time, the series keeps one foot in recognisable modern life, schools, hospitals, cheap flats, family strain, money trouble, and the unsettling feeling of being trapped in a body or future that doesn't quite feel like your own.

So what should you expect? Fast pacing, shifting locations, and a heroine who is powerful but never fully secure. Mercy wants love, truth, and release, but every step toward one seems to threaten the others. That tension is what keeps the whole series moving.
