Author bio

Jessie Newton is one of the writing names used by Utah author Elana Johnson, and it is the name she uses for friendship-centered women's fiction. These books lean toward beach towns, inns, sisters, mothers and daughters, and women trying to build a new life after grief, divorce, family strain, or a plain old wrong turn. The romance is there, but the bigger draw is usually the web of relationships around it.

She did not begin there.

Johnson started writing in late 2007 while working full-time, and her early breakout came in young adult fiction with Possession, which was published in 2011. For years she balanced writing with school technology work in Utah, and she has spoken about learning to write in short bursts around a job, children, and daily life. That practical side of her career still shows in how much she publishes and how clearly she separates her different kinds of books.

Over time, she built out a wider set of pen names. As Elana Johnson, she has written romance, fantasy, and young adult fiction. As Liz Isaacson, she writes cowboy romance. As Jessie Newton, she focuses on women's fiction that puts female friendship right at the center. On her own start-here page, she describes Jessie Newton books as stories that explore the many sides of women's relationships, and that is a pretty good summary of what readers get.

And the beach keeps showing up.

Under the Jessie Newton name, books like The Lighthouse, The Cottage on Nantucket, The Sound of the Sea, and The Hampton House show what she does best. The Lighthouse pulls five old friends back together in Five Island Cove and lets their shared history drive both the emotion and the mystery. The Cottage on Nantucket uses two sisters, a family summer house, and a final letter to stir up grief, secrets, and second chances. The Sound of the Sea takes a later-in-life heroine out onto a cruise and turns a holiday into a story about repair, friendship, and learning how to face family pain. The Hampton House keeps the coastal pull but adds restoration work, hidden passages, and a stronger mystery thread.

Readers who stay with her tend to like a few recurring things. Her women are often in midlife or later, carrying real responsibilities, adult children, old resentments, financial worries, or marriages that have changed shape. The settings matter too. Lighthouses, inns, cottages, cruise ships, and old houses are never just scenery. They are the places where people have to stop, listen, and decide what they want next.

She also writes fast, and with purpose.

Beyond fiction, she has published books for writers and helped start the QueryTracker blog, which fits the practical side of her author life. Even when her catalog stretches across genres and names, there is a clear through line. She likes emotionally direct stories, familiar communities, and characters who are allowed to start over without pretending the past never happened. These days, she still lives in Utah, far from the ocean she writes about so often. She has joked about living in a landlocked state and traveling to the beach when she needs her fix, usually with her husband happy to come along. That detail feels very on brand for Jessie Newton, a writer whose books keep finding ways to bring women back to the water, and back to each other.
