Westen Books in Order

Westen is Ferrell's small-town series, and small town really is the point. The books are set in fictional Westen, Ohio, where everyone knows the sheriff, the doctor, the cafe owner, and at least a few details they probably should mind their own business about. Each novel focuses on a different couple, but the town keeps knitting the stories together, so returning characters never feel like cameos dropped in for effect.

The series opens with Close to Home, where an overworked single mother and a burned-out doctor collide. From there the spotlight shifts through law enforcement, firefighters, social workers, attorneys, foster caregivers, and a local newspaper owner. The Roberts sisters become one of the key threads, but they are not the only ones. Westen feels lived in because the books keep moving through different corners of the same place and letting side characters grow into leads.

That also means the setting does a lot of work. In a big city, a problem can stay private for a while. In Westen, trouble ripples. A suspicious fire, a stalker, a blizzard, a frightened child, or a family secret quickly becomes part of the town's shared weather. So does kindness. People babysit, bring food, coach baseball, check on neighbors, and show up when things go wrong. The series gets warmth from that constant overlap.

The holiday stories are part of the charm too. Close to Christmas, Close to the Mistletoe, and Close to Santa's Heart are not throwaway extras. They deepen the community and let Ferrell play with a softer, more festive side of Westen without dropping the suspense entirely. Even at Christmas, someone may still be hiding from a past, stalking the wrong person, or bringing danger into town.

Later books show the place changing over time. Close to Danger pushes the suspense harder with a stalker and a storm-bound cabin. Close To The Heart brings in Westen House, at-risk teens, little Lexie, and two adults trying to imagine a family after damage. Close To Family circles back to the Roberts sisters as the town grows enough to open its own hospital. The result is a series that feels like it has a timeline, not just a setting.

Westen is warmer than the Edgars books, but it is not safer.

If you like community-centered romance with a real suspense thread, start at the beginning and stay in order. The pleasure here is not only in each couple's story, but in watching a whole town slowly turn into a place that feels familiar.
