Author bio
Suzanne Ferrell grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and reading came early. By her own account, she was a chapter-book kid at five, always wanting one more library book. As a young teen she found a stash of romance novels in her aunt's closet and realized two things at once: she loved these stories, and one day she wanted to write them herself.
That idea stuck.
Her parents were practical, so instead of heading straight toward a writing life, she went into medicine, the other field that pulled at her. She trained in a hospital nursing school, worked in obstetrics, got married, raised three children, and over time moved from Ohio to Florida and then Texas. After thirty-five years of delivering babies, she was ready for the second career that had been waiting in the background for a long time.
The shift into writing started quietly, during a lull on a night shift, when she pulled out paper and wrote a scene that had been circling in her head. Later she finished her first novel, Cantrell's Bride, and that was the real turning point. Once she finished a book, she was hooked.
Publishing became a family project. When her daughter Lyndsey, a graphic artist, needed a way to build work she could do from home, Ferrell suggested they try bringing out her books together. Lyndsey designed covers for Kidnapped and Hunted, Ferrell self-published them, and the plan worked better than either expected.
A lot of Ferrell's fiction reflects what she knows well: pressure, caregiving, fear, and the way ordinary people react when life tips sideways. In the Edgars Family books, starting with Kidnapped, danger comes fast, but the real draw is loyalty. Books like Vanished, Drained, and Betrayed mix law enforcement, family ties, and romance without losing the emotional core.
She writes a different kind of comfort in the Westen novels, set in a fictional Ohio town where doctors, deputies, teachers, firefighters, and neighbors keep crossing paths. Close to Home, Close to the Edge, and Close To The Heart lean more toward small-town life, but they still keep one foot in suspense. She has also moved into historical romance and wartime spy fiction with Turner's Vision, Shanghaied, and Tracked.
That interest in history had been there for years. As a girl she loved historical fiction and biography, and later she found herself reading deeply about wartime nurses while working on her World War II stories. The mix makes sense when you look at her career: a nurse who likes research, high stakes, and people under strain.
The recognition came before and after publication.
In 2006 she was a double finalist in Romance Writers of America's Golden Heart contest for the manuscripts that became Kidnapped and Hunted. Later, Seized and Vanished were finalists for National Readers' Choice Awards. These days she keeps adding to the Edgars, Westen, and Neptune's Five worlds, writing stories where capable, stubborn people find themselves in trouble and have to fight their way toward trust.
