Author bio
Wendy Wang was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and grew up on stories of ghosts, graveyards, and things that go bump in the night.(booknotification.com) Her family told tales about headstones glimpsed through trees and restless spirits that liked to move things around, and those images never really left her.
As a kid she started turning those stories into her own. At eleven she banged out her first tale on her dad's old Royal typewriter, about a girl who finds a body hidden in a trunk in the attic of her new house.(bookseriesinorder.com) That mix of ordinary life and creeping dread is still at the heart of what she writes.
For a while, though, writing stayed in the background. Like a lot of people, Wang took what she calls a sensible job and tried to be practical. The stories kept coming anyway, crowding her head with characters who refused to be quiet. Eventually the pressure built to a point where she had to choose, and she traded that safe career for the uncertainty of full-time writing.(audioeditions.com)
Her first novel, The Last Queen, appeared in 2015 and opened the door to The Book of Kaels, an epic fantasy about an ancient race who can command the five elements.(thriftbooks.com) At its center is Princess Neala, a young woman torn between duty to a fractured kingdom and her own sense of justice. The series blends elemental magic, court politics, and a slow-burn coming-of-age arc that follows Neala as she learns what it really means to lead.
Not long after, Wang shifted from secondary-world fantasy to modern ghosts and witches with Haunting Charlie, the first book in her Witches of Palmetto Point series.(fictiondb.com) Set on the South Carolina coast, the books follow psychic witch Charlie Payne, a single mom who sees the dead and keeps getting pulled into murder cases, haunted houses, and family drama. The stories lean into creaking old mansions, humid marshes, sudden storms, and the feeling that the past is never quite finished with you.
Family is a through-line in this world. Charlie is rarely alone; cousins, aunts, and other witches are forever in her kitchen, arguing over food and spells while helping her face down ghosts, demons, serial killers, and the occasional hurricane. The result is supernatural suspense threaded with warmth, where big scares sit right next to big, messy love.
With the Midlife Spirit Guides series, starting with Witch in Retrograde, Wang turns her attention to a different kind of heroine.(books.apple.com) Detective Sarah Jane Prentice is a forty‑something cop and witch whose spells are misfiring just as a serial killer fixates on her. These books mix paranormal mystery with the realities of grief, burnout, parenting adult kids, and dating again after decades.
Serenity Island Witches adds yet another flavor: cozy, craft-forward mystery. In Solstice and Stitches, quilt shop owner and modern witch Maris Middleton lives on a small island where magical quilts, social media influencers, and murder all intersect. Maris leans on her grandmother's ghost, a moody teenager, and a circle of witchy friends to keep her community safe.(books.apple.com)
Alongside the series, Wang writes shorter work that shows a different side of her voice. Love Lacey is a nostalgic, time-bending novella about friendship, regret, and second chances, while H.E.Y (Heartbreaks Ended Yesterday) is a compact, plainspoken self-help book about moving past old mistakes and building a better life.(goodreads.com)
When she is not drafting new hauntings or revising magic systems, Wang is usually reading. Friends and readers also mention her love of puttering in the garden and fussing over a small backyard pond, which fits the patient, detail-focused feel of her work. She keeps returning to the same territory in different ways: ordinary people, messy families, and the uncanny things that slip into the edges of everyday life.
