The first book, The Last Queen, follows Princess Neala, second daughter of Queen Riona. The Metal Kael introduces seer Sorrel Qinsa, who has a vision of the realms in flames and has to decide how much she is willing to sacrifice to get her warning to the queen. The Fire Kael follows Egan Crane, a fire‑aligned Kael whose own plans may either save the kingdom or destroy it.

Throughout the series, Wang plays with the idea of destiny versus choice. Many of her characters have seen glimpses of their futures or carry prophecies on their shoulders, but the heart of the story lies in what they do with that knowledge.
