Series background & context
The Warrior books tell the story of Caratacus, the British war leader who fought Rome for years before ending up as an exile in the heart of the empire. Co‑written with T. J. Andrews, the series offers a rare chance to see this period from the other side of the frontier.
The frame for the story is laid out in The King in Rome. In AD 61, after Boudica’s rebellion has been crushed, a Roman historian meets Caratacus at a banquet in Rome. Once a high king in Britain, Caratacus is now a hostage living under imperial watch. As he talks, the narrative slides back to his youth.
In The Druids’ Lair and The War Prince we follow Caratacus as a teenage prince sent to train with druids in the rugged west. The harsh schooling, bullying rivals and strange religious rites forge his character. Summoned home, he finds his father’s kingdom caught between the demands of Rome and the anger of neighbouring tribes, and begins to learn the craft of leadership.
Brothers of the Sword and Lord of War move into the years of open conflict. Caratacus gathers a band of loyal warriors, faces betrayal within his own family and leads resistance to the advancing Roman legions. Victories and defeats alike deepen his understanding of what it means to fight for a people rather than for personal glory.
The collected volume Warrior brings these strands together, following Caratacus from clever, sharp‑tongued youth to seasoned commander and, finally, to a man who must live with the outcome of his choices in the very city that once ordered his death. Along the way, the books nod to events and characters familiar from the Cato and Macro novels, but keep their focus firmly on British eyes.
For readers who have marched with the legions and want to know what those campaigns looked like from across the battlefield, Warrior offers a vivid, character‑driven alternative view of Rome’s expansion into Britannia.
