Series background & context
The Cato and Macro books, often known collectively as Eagles of the Empire, follow two very different Roman soldiers as they fight their way across the first‑century world. One is Lucius Cornelius Macro, a tough veteran who trusts his sword more than politics. The other is Quintus Licinius Cato, a former imperial slave whose quick mind pulls him into intrigue as often as into battle.
The series opens in AD 42 with Under the Eagle, when teenage Cato joins Macro’s century on the Rhine and is thrown straight into the invasion of Britain. Early novels stay close to that campaign, showing the slow, brutal work of conquering a resistant province and the messy mix of alliances, betrayals and imperial orders that sit behind the shield wall.
As the books progress, the pair are sent far beyond Britain. They serve in Judaea and Syria on the tense eastern frontier, are shipwrecked on Crete, hunt rebels in Egypt, and later return to Rome itself as part of the Praetorian Guard. Each posting brings new enemies: ambitious governors, corrupt officials, ruthless tribal leaders and the ever‑present threat of rival empires like Parthia.
Across the series, Scarrow lets time move forward. Macro and Cato gain rank, scars and responsibilities. Cato marries, becomes a father and is drawn deeper into the political games surrounding emperors Claudius and Nero. Macro wrestles with the idea of retirement even as fresh crises pull him back into the line.
The tone stays grounded in the day‑to‑day life of soldiers: forced marches in bad weather, dull garrison duty punctuated by sudden violence, and the constant grind of keeping men fed, paid and in some sort of order. Battles are important, but so are friendships in the ranks and the quiet decisions that keep a cohort together.
Later novels move into the years of Boudica’s rebellion and the dangerous early reign of Nero. Macro and Cato find themselves fighting not just Briton warbands or Parthian cavalry but also plots inside Rome, where a wrong step can be as deadly as any spear.
Read in order, the Cato and Macro sequence gives you a long, continuous arc: two men starting as junior officers on a cold frontier and, over more than twenty adventures, being dragged into almost every major crisis of their age.
