Violet Duke is a former English education professor who moved from teaching about books to writing contemporary romance herself. Her stories tend to pair ordinary people with complicated pasts, sharp banter, and a real chance at starting over.
She made her fiction debut in 2013 with Resisting the Bad Boy, the first part of the linked Sullivan Brothers story that became the Can't Resist series. It introduced readers to the mix Duke returns to often: attraction, emotional baggage, close friendships, and characters who need to decide whether love is worth the risk.
That first series gave her a busy start.
The three-book arc follows Abby Bartlett as she finds herself caught between brothers Connor and Brian Sullivan, while the later Finding the Right Girl gives Brian a separate love story. Duke doesn't treat the romance as a simple choice between types. She makes room for grief, loyalty, family history, and the messy ways people try to protect each other.
She brought a lighter small-town feel to Cactus Creek. In Love, Chocolate, and Beer, a chocolatier and a brewmaster turn a business rivalry into a very personal battle of wills. Love, Diamonds, and Spades, Love, Tussles, and Takedowns, and Love, Exes, and Ohs stay in the same welcoming town, following new couples while letting familiar faces drift through the background.
Duke's books can be playful, but they don't avoid hard things. The Unfinished Love books follow couples whose lives have been shaped by sacrifice, family responsibility, separation, and the consequences of old decisions. Before That Night centers on Addison Milan, who is secretly raising her younger siblings, and Caine Spencer, the police officer whose job could threaten the fragile life she has built. Seven years later, Every Night Without You returns to their story.
Second chances show up a lot in her work.
In All There Is, childhood friends Emma Stevens and Jake Rowan must face the painful history of a fire that changed both their families. Jackson's Trust shifts to football media, where analyst Jackson Gray and sideline reporter Leila Hart navigate ambition, friendship, attraction, and secrets they would rather keep private.
Duke has described herself as a book-a-day reader, a home cook who ignores recipes, and an enthusiastic user of power tools despite not always checking the directions first. She lives in Hawai'i with her children and husband, and has embraced a work-from-home uniform of pajamas and rubber slippers. It fits the warm, down-to-earth spirit of her romances.
