Violent Kingdom takes a familiar idea, star-crossed lovers from enemy families, and drops it into Lili St Germain's favorite kind of territory, the criminal underworld. This is her Romeo and Juliet version, but there is nothing soft or theatrical about it. The series opens with Avery Capulet, the prized daughter of a powerful crime family, missing and in terrible danger.

Across from her is Rome Montague, a drug dealer, thief, and enemy by bloodline. Their names tell you the shape of the story, but the books do not play like a simple retelling. They start with captivity, old grudges, and the sense that both characters are already being used by forces much bigger than themselves. Love is in the mix, but so are leverage, fear, and family power.

That pressure is the whole engine.

San Francisco and the wider California crime scene give the series its mood. These are not castle feuds or high-school rivalries. Then it becomes whether Avery and Rome can hold on to each other while betrayal, arranged futures, and hidden enemies keep tightening the trap. The books lean hard into obsession, body memory, and the way love can feel like both refuge and threat.

This series is darker and more brutal than a standard mafia romance. It likes sharp turns, high emotion, and scenes where the danger outside the relationship is matched by the danger inside it. If you read St Germain for morally compromised love stories, this is one of her clearest examples.

Read it for the warring families, the forbidden attraction, and the underworld politics. Just make sure you read it in order. The three books tell one escalating story, and each one lands best when you go straight on to the next.
