Series background & context

Vigilante begins as a revenge story and then keeps refusing to stay that simple. Brad Mantruso survives the pirate attack that kills his family, is pulled out of space by a passing Fleet ship, and is left with nothing but skill, rage, and a very clear list of people he wants dead. Reinventing himself as mercenary captain Brad Madrid is supposed to be the first step toward that reckoning.

Instead, he keeps getting dragged into bigger fights. That is the series in a sentence. Brad wants a personal answer to a personal wound, but the closer he gets to the pirates and raiders behind it, the clearer it becomes that they are tied to wider criminal and political structures across the Solar System. His private war keeps colliding with public crises.

That gives the books a useful mix of scales. On one level, these are fast near-future adventures with shipboard action, mercenary contracts, ambushes, and intelligence work. On another, they are about how revenge changes once institutions, conspiracies, and civil conflict get involved. Kate Falcone, spy and uneasy ally, is a big part of that texture. She keeps pushing Brad toward truths he might rather not know.

So if you are wondering what kind of ride this is, think damaged lead, sharp pacing, and a Solar System that keeps getting more complicated the more Brad learns. Heart of Vengeance and Oath of Vengeance drive the personal side hardest. The later Bound by Stars books widen the stage into war, treason, and the question of what justice looks like when millions of lives are tangled up in it.
