Author bio

Glynn Stewart is a Canadian science fiction and fantasy writer who built his career from the indie side, one steady release at a time. He writes space opera, military science fiction, urban fantasy, and the kind of hybrid stories where magic and starships can share the same page without feeling strange.

Before writing became his full-time work, Stewart worked in accounting and financial analysis. He has joked more than once that writing rescued him from a bleak future as an accountant, but the shift was real. For years he wrote around a day job, building the habit and discipline that still shows in the pace of his publishing.

That discipline matters.

His breakthrough came with Starship's Mage. The series began as a short story, grew into serialized novellas, and then became a full novel and a much larger universe. It also set the pattern for a lot of what readers come to him for: fast movement, clear stakes, big systems, and worlds where technology, institutions, and magic all matter at the same time.

From there he kept branching out. Castle Federation leans into fleet warfare and cold-war tension. Duchy of Terra starts with humanity conquered and turns into a wider story about liberation, diplomacy, and uneasy alliances. Peacekeepers of Sol asks what happens after the war is supposed to be over, when relief work and diplomacy can be as dangerous as any battle.

He is just as comfortable stepping away from pure space opera. ONSET and Changeling Blood bring secret agencies, vampires, fae courts, and modern cities into the mix. Teer & Kard heads into fantasy western territory, while newer books like House Adamant show how much he enjoys writing capable people who inherit impossible problems and then have to get practical very quickly.

These books like momentum.

Stewart has said that Starship's Mage started when he played with the idea of a ship that really did run on magic, instead of a science fiction story quietly hand-waving the problem. That small, playful thought became a career. It also helps explain why his fiction feels so readable. He likes big concepts, but he grounds them in jobs, chains of command, logistics, and people who still have to show up and do the work.

He has lived in several places over the years and now lives in Alberta with his partner and their cats. In late 2023, he and his partner moved back to Calgary to be closer to family. By 2026, he had published more than sixty books, which makes his often-mentioned unstoppable writing habit sound less like a joke and more like a plain statement of fact.
