Castle Federation Books in Order

The Castle Federation series is straight-up fleet and starfighter military science fiction, built around a cold war that is clearly running out of time. Thirty years earlier, the Terran Commonwealth tried to force all of human space into a single empire and was checked by the Alliance of Free Stars, led in large part by the Castle Federation and the Coraline Imperium. When the books open, the shooting has stopped, but nobody really believes the peace will last.

The main point-of-view through the core run is Kyle Roberts. He starts as a fighter commander and grows into one of the people shaping the entire war. That long view is a big part of the fun. You are not just following one mission or one ship. You are watching a career unfold as the conflict grows from local alarms and pirate problems into full fleet action.

The ships matter here. So do the pilots. Stewart clearly enjoys carriers, strike craft, stealth missions, and the practical problems of fighting in space, and the books lean into that without getting unreadably technical. Space Carrier Avalon begins with an aging legendary carrier on what is supposed to be a final tour. From there the series widens through Stellar Fox, Battle Group Avalon, and beyond into a larger campaign where tactics, logistics, and command decisions all keep raising the stakes.

What holds it together is the balance between momentum and structure. The series likes hardware and battles, but it is just as interested in how alliances work, how officers handle responsibility, and how old institutions react when history starts moving again. If you want a space war story with carrier decks, political pressure, and a lead who keeps getting handed bigger problems than anyone should reasonably want, this is very much that kind of series.
