2

The Runaway

by Kate O'Hearn

2014

3

War of the Realms

by Kate O'Hearn

2016

War breaks out across the Norse worlds, and the bridge back to Asgard is closed. Freya and the Valkyries must trust risky allies, race between realms, and stop the fighting before both Asgard and Earth are destroyed.

Series background & context

The Valkyrie books take Norse mythology and make it feel immediate. Freya lives in Asgard among Odin, Thor, Loki, and the Valkyries, and she dreads the birthday that will end her childhood and force her fully into Valkyrie duty. In O'Hearn's version, Valkyries are not just glamorous warriors. They reap souls from battlefields and carry the weight of death with them. Freya has the power to kill with a touch, and she hates the life that seems to have been chosen for her.

That tension gives the series its shape. Freya is supposed to follow the path set by her mother and sisters, but she is drawn to the human world instead. She watches humans from a distance, trying to understand friendship, laughter, and ordinary life. When her first mission sends her into the mortal world, the story opens up into a larger adventure that brings in Archie, a human friend, and Orus, her raven companion. Their presence keeps the books warm and funny even when the stakes rise.

The setting matters a lot here. Asgard feels grand, but it is only one part of a much larger map that includes the Nine Realms, the Rainbow Bridge, Frost Giants, Trolls, and other powers always capable of starting trouble. In The Runaway, Freya's search for the missing Valkyrie Brünnhilde leads her deeper into secrets and old grudges. By War of the Realms, the conflict is no longer contained. War spreads across the realms and spills into Earth, forcing Freya to decide what kind of hero she wants to be.

Freya's real rebellion is empathy.

That may be the best way to think about this trilogy. Yes, there are battles, monsters, and mythic politics. But the emotional core is Freya refusing to believe that strength has to mean cruelty. She keeps pushing back against the idea that duty and compassion cannot live side by side. That makes the books feel like classic quest fantasy, but also like a coming-of-age story about choosing your own values.

If you want fast middle grade fantasy with gods, monsters, travel between worlds, and a heroine who questions the rules she inherited, this series is a good fit. The books build directly on each other, so the best route is Valkyrie, then The Runaway, then War of the Realms. Expect a lively blend of Norse myth, action, friendship, and a lot of pressure on one girl who would rather be kind than legendary.
