Series background & context

At the center of the Atlantis trilogy are Riley Evans and her cousin Alfie, two kids who think they are in for a dull whale-watching trip and instead get swept into a shipwreck in the Bermuda Triangle. They wash ashore on Atlantis, and the series immediately makes clear that this is no calm lost paradise. It is beautiful, strange, and full of creatures most people only know from stories, but it is also divided, secretive, and dangerous.

Riley is the steady one, practical, stubborn, and focused on finding her family. Alfie adds energy and heart, and together they keep the story grounded even when the setting gets wild. Atlantis is populated by people and magical beings, including unicorns, gargoyles, talking animals, and other creatures, yet the island is not united. Different territories have their own rules and tensions, and the darker truth of the Forbidden Zone hangs over everything.

That ongoing mystery drives the first book. Riley and Alfie want to find their parents and get home, but the closer they get to answers, the clearer it becomes that some people on the island do not want them leaving. The wonder of Atlantis is real, yet O'Hearn keeps pairing it with suspicion, survival, and the sense that the kids have stumbled into an old problem that was waiting to explode.

This Atlantis is magical, but it never feels fully safe.

The later books widen the story in a smart way. Returning home does not end the trouble, because life away from Atlantis brings its own problems, especially for those who depend on the island's magic. When the story moves back to Atlantis, the focus shifts toward unstable weather, tension between territories, kidnapped friends, and a deeper look at the island's history. That gives the trilogy a nice balance, part survival quest, part family story, part lost-world mystery.

What makes the series work is that Riley stays clear-eyed through all of it. She is not on the island to be dazzled. She wants answers, she wants her people safe, and she keeps moving. If that sounds good, start with Escape from Atlantis and read straight through. The trilogy is built as one continuous adventure, with each book revealing more about the island, its magic, and the cost of trying to leave it behind.
