Series background & context
The V Plague series starts with a nightmare that arrives all at once. John Chase, a former Army major, is in Atlanta on business when coordinated attacks tear the country apart. Nuclear strikes and a nerve agent leave cities in ruins, while the infected become a threat to anyone still trying to stay alive.
John's first goal is simple: get home to his wife in Arizona.
It is anything but simple in practice. On the road, John joins forces with Rachel and Dog, a German shepherd whose loyalty becomes part of the group's survival. Their trip across a shattered United States brings them into contact with infected people, frightened survivors, violent opportunists, military units, and communities trying to impose order on chaos.
The series treats the infected as victims of a disease rather than the undead. That difference matters as the threat changes over time. The infection does not stay predictable, and the people who remain alive can be just as dangerous as the plague itself. John is capable and experienced, but he is never free of loss, doubt, or the burden of deciding who can be saved.
The scope grows well beyond a single road trip. What begins as a survival story expands into military missions, political betrayal, foreign conflict, rescue operations, and efforts to understand the attack that ended the old world. The books keep introducing new allies and enemies while returning to the people John refuses to abandon.
It is a fast, high-stakes series with plenty of action, but its engine is loyalty. John, Rachel, Dog, and their wider circle keep moving because someone needs help, someone is missing, or a bad situation will get worse if they stand still.
Begin with Unleashed, then read in publication order through Legion. The later V Plague Legacy books continue the setting years afterward, so they are best saved until the main nineteen-book run is complete.
