Series background & context
Plague Wars starts with a dangerous idea: what if a plague could heal people instead of simply killing them? The Eden Plague can repair terrible injuries and change the people it infects, but its benefits come with consequences. That makes it a source of hope, fear, political control, and conflict from the beginning.
The first story is close to the present day.
In The Eden Plague, combat medic Daniel Markis becomes caught up in a struggle over the virus and the people trying to possess it. Reaper's Run follows Marine Sergeant Jill "Reaper" Repeth after a miraculous recovery puts her in the crosshairs. Skull's Shadows turns toward sniper Alan "Skull" Denham, a harder and more solitary figure who fights the forces exploiting the chaos.
The series keeps changing as its world changes. The early Decade One books are apocalyptic technothrillers set in a divided United States, where Eden-infected people become targets and new communities struggle to survive. Eden's Exodus, Apocalypse Austin, and Nearest Night follow the growing resistance to authoritarian power and the effort to create a place where Edens can live freely.
Then the threat grows beyond Earth.
Beginning with The Demon Plagues, the series moves into its Alien Invasion phase. Old characters remain important, but the stakes become international and then planetary. New plagues, alien technology, military programs, and the warning of a coming enemy force humanity into alliances it may not be ready to make.
The books balance several kinds of tension. There are tactical missions, covert operations, political fights, desperate rescues, and the question of what the Eden Plague is really doing to humanity. VanDyke and co-author Ryan King keep returning to people whose abilities make them valuable but also vulnerable. Being healed does not make anyone safe.
The tone is action-heavy and serious, with a strong military and survival streak. The series is not a collection of standalones. Characters, factions, and consequences carry forward, even though different books may spotlight different members of the ensemble.
Start with The Eden Plague, then continue with Reaper's Run and Skull's Shadows. From there, reading in order gives the clearest view of how a medical mystery becomes a long-running story about war, survival, and humanity's place in a much larger conflict.
