The Song Maiden

by Jonathan Brooks

2018

Cadence, unable to speak or sign in the real world, enters the VR game Uniworld Online and rolls a Bard. Inside the game she discovers she can finally sing, and uses her new voice to help NPCs, build fragile alliances, and begin quietly seeking justice for past wrongs.

Series background & context

The Uniworld Online trilogy focuses less on power fantasy and more on what a fully immersive game can mean to someone who has never really had a voice. Its main character, Cadence, is born with a rare condition that disrupts the signals between her brain, vocal cords, and hands.

In the real world, that means she cannot speak or use sign language. She communicates through writing and texting instead, navigating school and early adulthood in a body that does not cooperate and a society that often treats her as invisible or inconvenient. An ugly incident with a college professor underlines just how vulnerable that makes her.

While she is recovering from that encounter, Cadence is introduced to a next generation VR system and to Uniworld Online, a fantasy MMO with Light and Dark factions and a reputation for being more immersive than anything before it. For most players it is a cutting edge hobby. For her, it is a chance to exist without the physical limitations that define her offline life.

Inside the game she rolls up as a Bard, discovers that she can sing, and realizes how powerful that simple act feels. Her priorities are different from the min maxers and griefers she meets. Instead of chasing top tier gear or leaderboard positions, she is drawn to helping NPCs, treating them as real people rather than quest dispensers.

The trilogy follows her as she learns the mechanics of Uniworld, uncovers hidden quests, and figures out how to use her in game abilities to seek justice for what happened to her in the real world. Along the way she builds relationships with other players, some supportive and some hostile, and starts to shift the balance between the game’s Light and Dark factions.

Readers who enjoy LitRPG but want a protagonist who is not a lifelong gamer, and who cares as much about empathy and storytelling as raw DPS, will find a lot to like here. The books still deliver stats, quests, and level ups, but they put human healing at the center of the grind.
