Undead Books in Order

The Undead books come from Rachel Caine's earlier period, when she was still publishing as Roxanne Longstreet, and they have a different flavor from the later Morganville novels. These are adult vampire books with more horror in the bloodstream. The lead is not a teen discovering a weird town. It is Mike Bowman, a Dallas surgeon who is pulled into vampirism against his will and has to work out what staying alive even means once he is no longer fully alive.

That reluctant angle matters. Mike is not stepping into a glamorous immortal life. He is losing the one he had. His marriage is under strain, his moral center keeps getting tested, and the people around him are in danger because the vampire world is full of older, nastier predators with very little patience for conscience. The Dallas setting helps too. The books feel urban and specific without turning the city into a cartoon version of itself.

These are monster books first.

The sequel, Cold Kiss, pushes the idea further by showing Mike trying to survive inside vampire society rather than just reacting to the shock of becoming one. That opens up questions about rules, factions, and what counts as civilized when the hunger itself never goes away. Caine was already interested in systems and pressure at this stage, and you can see the beginnings of later work in the way she builds a supernatural world that runs on bargains and control.

If you are coming here from Morganville, expect a rougher, more adult version of Caine's vampire writing. If you are coming from horror with a strong character thread, this is the better fit. The books are about survival, appetite, guilt, and the simple unpleasant fact that getting turned does not solve your problems. It just gives them teeth.
