The Yankee Star of Two Rivers Station

by Robert Peecher

2018

This collection of shorter Two Rivers Station adventures fills in more of Jack Bell's world after the war. It is a quick way to spend more time with the marshals, outlaws, and rough justice of the series.

Series background & context

The Two Rivers Station books are set in north Texas after the Civil War, when the shooting may be over but the country is still far from settled. Federal authority is back, local resentments are raw, and a badge means something different depending on who is looking at it. That gives the whole series a strong Reconstruction-era tension from the start.

The key figure is Jack Bell, a former Confederate soldier now serving as a U.S. marshal. Around him are people who carry the war in different ways, including his friend Zeke Thornton, a Unionist during the conflict, and other recurring figures who help make the station feel lived in. Their job is classic frontier law work, chasing fugitives, solving murders, handling robbers, and trying to hold order together.

But the politics matter too.

Peecher uses that setting well. Jack is not just another Western lawman in a hat. He is a man wearing federal authority in a place that does not forget the war, and that creates good pressure in almost every story. The series can feel a little like an old TV Western in the best sense, strong recurring characters, town problems, hard rides, and justice worked out under stress.

Start with Redemption at Two Rivers Station for the fullest introduction, then move on to Deception at Two Rivers Station and The Yankee Star of Two Rivers Station. If you like Westerns where the badge is only half the story and history keeps leaning on the present, this is one of Peecher's best entry points.
