Series background & context

The Animas Forks books are set in a rough mining camp high in the Colorado mountains during the 1870s. The real Animas Forks was a boomtown, but Robert Peecher's version is larger, meaner, and much busier, the kind of place where prospectors, gamblers, drifters, saloon girls, merchants, and gunfighters all come looking for a break.

One of the smartest things about the series is that it does not lean on just one hero. Adam Barton matters a lot, a former lawman who would rather work with his hands than keep wearing a badge, but the town around him is just as important. Judge Spivey, Colonel Wall Brandt, Bell Rogers, Albert Hutchinson, and the rest give the books an ensemble feel, with different people stepping into the foreground as the camp grows more crowded and more dangerous.

That shifting focus is the point.

Some books read like straight frontier action, some like a town-under-pressure drama, and some like a boomtown mystery where everyone has a motive. Claim disputes, search parties, grudges, missing people, hired killers, and hard winters all shape what happens here. As the series goes on, the local fights start adding up into something bigger, a struggle over who gets to own the camp, run it, and survive in it.

If you like Westerns with a strong sense of place, this series has it. The mud, snow, greed, noise, and thin mountain air all matter. So does the constant feeling that law is being invented on the fly. Start with The Two-Gun Carpenter if you want to watch the camp come together from the ground up. From there, the fun is seeing how each new arrival changes the balance.
