Dirty Retaliation

by CP Mandara

2020

Adie finally has Ione in chains and James on the clock. What begins as revenge turns into a brutal power struggle as obsession, violence, and old grudges push everyone past the point of reason.

Series background & context

This series belongs to Adrien, or Adie, Dumortier, and it knows it. He arrives carrying a mess of history, anger, and ego after being left for dead and deciding that everyone around him deserves to pay. In classic C.P. Mandara fashion, that makes him dangerous before the romance even starts.

He is charming, vain, dangerous, and almost impossible to call a hero.

The core setup is revenge. Adie believes his best friend James left him to die, and he cannot let that go. Instead of going straight at him, he chooses a nastier route and goes after James through the people closest to him. That means kidnapping, coercion, humiliation, and a lot of calculated cruelty. It also means the books are never just about lust. Every scene carries the weight of old betrayal.

What keeps the series moving is that Adie is not the only one with an agenda. Ione becomes a major fault line in his revenge plan, and female assassin Melinda Leader adds another layer of danger, because she is not someone he can easily intimidate or predict. Adie spends a lot of time acting like the most powerful person in the room, only to discover that other people are playing their own games behind his back. That tension gives the books their bite.

The setting has more of a covert-ops feel than many of Mandara's other series. There are trained operatives, kidnappings, hidden loyalties, and the constant sense that personal desire and professional violence are tangled together. The books move fast, and even when the action shifts into bedrooms, basements, or interrogation-style scenes, the larger world of espionage and criminal influence is never far away.

Nothing stays neat for long.

Tone matters here. Twisted Dark and Deadly is meaner, blacker, and more openly chaotic than some of Mandara's other romances. The humor is sardonic, the power games are harsh, and the relationships are built on obsession, coercion, and shifting loyalty rather than trust. Because Adie already comes in with heavy history, the books feel like a continuation of a larger world, but they also work as a focused antihero story in their own right.

If you want dark erotic suspense with kidnapping, revenge, spy-world intrigue, and a lead who causes half the trouble himself, this is the series to pick up. Adie is the engine, and once he starts moving, everyone else has to deal with the fallout.
