Series background & context

This is the series where C.P. Mandara goes all in on dark erotic suspense. It starts with Lois Reeves, an operative who needs BDSM training before she can take on an undercover job, and James Leverett, the dominant chosen to test her limits. What looks like mission prep turns complicated almost immediately, because attraction gets there before trust does.

Nobody in this series ever gets to keep work and desire in separate boxes.

From there, the books widen into something much larger than a training dynamic. Lois is sent toward Alain Dumortier, a dangerous criminal target she is meant to seduce, outmaneuver, and ultimately kill. Instead, she ends up caught in his world. Captivity, manipulation, drugs, and psychological games become part of the story, and what begins as a black-ops setup turns into a twisted triangle involving Lois, James, and Alain.

That triangle is the real engine of the series. James brings discipline, control, and a cold professional edge. Alain brings danger, seduction, and the kind of chaos that can rearrange an entire plot. Lois sits in the middle, not because she is passive, but because she is constantly being forced to decide who she is in each moment: operative, captive, lover, liar, survivor. Mandara keeps that balance unstable, which is what gives the series its punch.

The setting helps a lot. These books move from private training rooms and controlled BDSM spaces into criminal estates, safe houses, operational missions, and hostile territory. That gives the whole series a thriller pace. There are rescues, betrayals, interrogations, and missions layered over the erotic tension. Even intimate scenes tend to feel like they matter to the larger plot instead of sitting outside it.

Adie Dumortier also becomes a key part of the wider world, and readers who like him will see how this series helps set up his later books. That is part of why reading order matters here more than it does in some of Mandara's other work. The books build straight through the same characters, the same enemy, and the same escalating problem.

The tone is dark, fast, and unapologetically intense. BDSM is not decoration in this series. It is woven into the character dynamics, the power struggles, and the suspense. If you want a softer romance, this is the wrong shelf. If you want a six-book run that feels half black-ops thriller and half dangerous love triangle, Sparks, Smoke, Flames, Fire, Embers, and Ashes are built to be read in order.
