Series background & context

The Trouble Waters collection gathers Michael Lindley’s historical mystery and romantic suspense novels that all share a pull toward water, storms, and the kind of choices people make on the edge of a shore. These stories move between a northern Michigan resort town and the remote beaches of Florida, always circling themes of love, betrayal, and the long reach of family secrets.

In The EmmaLee Affairs and The Summer Town, the focus stays on Charlevoix, Michigan, and the grand cruising yacht EmmaLee. A local boatbuilder’s son falls for the daughter of a powerful summer family, a crime tears through both households, and the small harbor community is left reeling. Decades later, descendants and newcomers are still living with the aftermath as new scandals, land deals, and tragedies draw them back to the same boat and the same stretch of lake.

The collection then turns south with Grayton Winds and Bend to the Tempest, novels set around the tiny village of Grayton Beach on Florida’s northern Gulf Coast. Here Lindley follows Mathew Coulter, a World War I veteran tied to a ruthless family that controls the liquor trade in 1920s Atlanta. When he flees to the coast, he finds refuge among dune lakes, pine forests, and a community shaped by bootleggers, sheriffs, and storm season.

A gifted blind girl, a killer hurricane, and an old love who appears at his eighty fifth birthday force Mathew to reckon with everything he has tried to outrun.

As in the Charlevoix books, the structure often moves between a present day frame and earlier decades, using memory and old letters to open up what really happened. The mood is more suspenseful than cozy, but the focus stays on character rather than graphic violence. Lindley spends time with the quiet moments in cottages, marinas, and beach houses so that the betrayals, affairs, and sudden crimes land with real weight.

Taken together, the Trouble Waters novels feel like one extended meditation on the price of keeping secrets in close knit communities. Calm lakes and sunlit beaches hide bootlegging routes, business rivalries, and resentments that span generations. Readers who like dual timeline mysteries with strong sense of place will find that starting at the beginning and moving through the collection in order makes each new revelation in the later books feel even more satisfying.
