Series background & context

The Hanna and Alex books are Low Country mysteries that follow attorney Hanna Walsh and lawman Alex Frank through crime, corruption, and complicated love in and around Charleston and Pawleys Island. The series blends police procedural stakes with family drama and a strong sense of coastal place, from live oak lined streets to lonely marsh creeks.

Readers first meet them in Begin At The End and Lies We Never See. Hanna is a free legal clinic attorney whose comfortable life collapses when her husband’s risky land deal implodes and he is found murdered. Alex, then a Charleston detective, is assigned to the case and becomes tangled in her grief, her finances, and a widening investigation that connects to an old journal and the story of a widowed ancestor on Pawleys Island during the Civil War.

As the series grows through A Following Sea and Death On The New Moon, the pair keep circling one another while facing new dangers. Alex’s ex wife returns with secrets of her own. Hanna tries to imagine a future beyond betrayal and loss. Cases that begin as local homicides or missing person reports soon point toward organized crime, long buried family scandals, and the kind of decisions that can cost a career or a life.

Their relationship is as precarious as many of the investigations they take on.

Later books like The Sister Taken and The Harbor Storms push them into even higher stakes, from confrontations with a powerful crime family to the discovery of a terror plot that reaches far beyond the harbor. Alex’s roles shift over time, from Charleston detective to federal agent to acting sheriff, while Hanna juggles her work for desperate clients, the struggles of her teenage son, and the fallout from each new case. Settings expand too, with stories taking them to the Florida Keys in The Marquesas Drift and Across The Keys as they try to balance helping family with stopping violent criminals.

The Coulter name, familiar from Lindley’s historical novels, threads into the series as well. In The Coulter Legacy a lost manuscript about Hanna’s ancestor Mathew Coulter, whose family once controlled parts of the Prohibition era liquor trade, surfaces during a modern fentanyl crisis. The past and present collide, and the question of what a family owes to its history becomes as urgent as catching the latest killer.

Throughout, these books stay more suspenseful than graphic. Lindley leans on twisting plots, cliffhanger chapter endings, and the pull of marshes, barrier islands, and historic streets rather than detailed gore. Each novel wraps up its central mystery, but threads of romance, friendship, and lingering danger continue from one to the next, making the series especially rewarding to read in order.
