Triton Experiment is Piper J. Drake's compact science fiction romance series about hidden identities, military pressure, and the trouble that starts when duty collides with desire. The books follow mercenary Kat Darah, whose shapeshifting nature is a secret with serious consequences, and Lieutenant Christopher Rygard, the soldier who gets pulled into her orbit before he understands what that could cost either of them.

The first book, Hunting Kat, is the spark. Kat and Rygard meet during what should have been a one-night connection, but attackers interrupt the plan and force Kat to reveal that she is much more dangerous, and much more vulnerable, than she looks. From there, the series keeps moving outward. Tracking Kat raises the stakes by sending Rygard's unit missing and pushing Kat toward the edge of the rules that are supposed to protect her. She has to use every tool she has to find him, which makes the book less about first attraction and more about loyalty under pressure.

Then Fighting Kat drops them into deep cover as gladiators in an arena mission. It is a good example of how Drake likes to escalate. The books do not just repeat the same emotional beat. They force Kat and Rygard to learn how to operate together in new conditions, this time with a crew around them and survival depending on more than brute strength.

The tone here is fast and focused. These are not giant worldbuilding epics. They are romantic science fiction novellas that care about action, secrecy, chemistry, and the cost of being seen for what you really are. If you like future settings with mercenaries, missions, and just enough shapeshifter danger to keep everything unstable, Triton Experiment is an easy series to binge.
