Series background & context

Safeguard is Piper J. Drake in tight, focused romantic suspense mode. The series follows private security professionals, military veterans, and specialists who know how to manage a threat, even when the threat turns out to be larger than anyone expected. The books are built around protection jobs, missing people, witness security, hostile surveillance, and the messy fact that feelings do not wait for a mission to be over.

The first novel, Hidden Impact, introduces Gabriel Diaz, a mercenary working with an elite team, and Maylin Cheng, who is desperate to find her missing younger sister. What starts as one woman's plea for help turns into a far more dangerous conspiracy. That is a good introduction to the series as a whole. Safeguard likes competent people who think they understand the assignment, only to discover that the real danger is wider, stranger, and more personal.

In Deadly Testimony, the pressure tightens. Kyle Yeun becomes a target after agreeing to testify about his former employer's crimes, and sniper Lizzy Scott is the one trying to keep him alive. The danger is external, but the tension inside the partnership matters just as much. Lizzy is not there to play nice, and Kyle is not an easy man to protect, which gives the romance some bite.

Then Contracted Defense closes the trilogy by turning a supposedly simple security install into a mix of cyberattack, physical intrusion, and betrayal from inside the circle. Adam Hicks and Victoria Ash have to protect a reclusive client and uncover a mole before the whole situation collapses. That gives the final book a slightly more technical edge, but it still feels of a piece with the rest of the series.

Safeguard is leaner and more procedural than some of Drake's later work. The books move quickly, the threats feel grounded, and the relationships grow under real pressure. If you like romantic suspense where the leads are already trained adults, not amateurs stumbling into trouble, this trilogy has a very steady hand.
