Series background & context
From Antiques Roadkill onward, the Trash 'n' Treasures Mystery series follows Brandy Borne as she returns to Serenity, Iowa, after her marriage falls apart. She moves back in with her mother, Vivian Borne, a former actress, antiques dealer, gossip, and unstoppable meddler. What starts as a shaky fresh start turns into a new working life, because Brandy and Vivian begin buying and selling antiques together, first at booths and malls, then through their own shop. Their shih tzu Sushi is always nearby, usually at exactly the wrong, or right, moment.
Nothing in Serenity stays quiet for long.
That setup gives the books their real engine. Brandy is practical, weary, and forever trying to contain the damage. Vivian is theatrical, impulsive, and absolutely certain she can solve any crime that crosses her path. The mysteries matter, but the mother-daughter push and pull is what makes the series feel alive. They love each other, irritate each other, and keep dragging each other into danger.
The antiques angle is not just decoration. Auctions, flea markets, estate sales, storage lockers, holiday booths, old tools, rare books, jewelry, toys, furniture, and collectible oddities all help shape the cases. Sometimes the object is the motive. Sometimes it is the clue. Sometimes it just gets Brandy and Vivian in the room where the trouble starts. The series is especially fun if you like cozy mysteries that care about the thrill of rummaging through castoffs and spotting the one thing everybody else missed.
The tone is cozy, but it is never too neat.
These books like side comments, running jokes, recipes, collecting tips, and a little fourth-wall mischief. The comedy can get broad, yet the emotional core stays grounded in family strain, small-town loyalties, and Brandy's ongoing effort to build a workable life in the middle of Vivian's storms. If you enjoy sleuths who bicker as much as they investigate, this series knows how to use that friction.
As the books go on, the world opens up. Most entries stay rooted in Serenity, a Mississippi River town full of local history, gossip, and suspiciously frequent deaths. But later stories take the duo to comic conventions, English-style village festivals, London, and even Texas. The series also changes more than many cozies do. Brandy's relationship with Chief Tony Cassato develops, the shop grows, Vivian turns crime-solving into performance art, and the pair even spend time in the spotlight with a reality show. Reading in order lets those shifts land.
There are holiday stories, too, which fit the series especially well. Christmas walks, pageants, Santa suits, fruitcakes, and plum puddings somehow keep ending in homicide. Even then, the books stay true to the same appeal: clutter with a story behind it, a town full of characters who cannot mind their own business, and two women who keep pushing past common sense because somebody has to get to the truth. If you want cozy mysteries that mix antiques, family comedy, and murder with a strong small-town Iowa flavor, this is the shape of the ride.
