Author bio
Tracey West writes children's books that connect adventure with the pleasure of discovering a world a little at a time. Her work includes original fantasy, stories based on familiar screen characters and books for readers moving into chapter books. Dragon Masters and Pixie Tricks are central parts of that original fiction, alongside a long record of writing connected with cartoons, films and games.
She grew up in a small New Jersey town with a brother and sister. Reading, outdoor play and cartoons were part of her childhood, and a classroom visit from children's author Leonard Kessler helped her imagine becoming a writer herself. She later worked on school newspapers, carrying an interest in writing through high school and college before taking a job in children's publishing in New York City.
Learning how books were made helped her find a way into writing them.
West has written for different ages and formats, from bedtime stories to books for middle-grade readers. Her own interest in dragons and other mythical creatures helped inspire Dragon Masters. In Rise of the Earth Dragon, a boy named Drake is taken to a castle and learns that he has been chosen to work with a dragon. The premise turns an unfamiliar responsibility into the beginning of an adventure, with other children beside him as he learns.
That series is written for newly independent readers and uses frequent illustrations alongside the text. Saving the Sun Dragon gives the young characters a problem that requires cooperation when one dragon falls ill. The stories build a continuing group around clear immediate challenges, so readers can become familiar with the children and their dragons while meeting a new difficulty in each volume.
Her Pixie Tricks series begins with Sprite's Secret and follows a different magical cast. It is another route into her original storytelling for children, showing that the creatures and rules of a fantasy world can create both trouble and opportunities for discovery. Her early affection for imaginary worlds remains visible in the variety of settings she has developed across her books.
Familiar characters can also be a bridge into reading.
West wrote chapter books based on Pokémon cartoon episodes, including I Choose You, which introduces Ash Ketchum's ambition to become a Pokémon master. Those adaptations give children a written version of adventures they may already recognize, while asking them to follow events through prose. Her broader catalogue includes many other books connected with screen and game properties, a part of her work that sits alongside the series based on her own ideas.
Today, West lives in the Catskill Mountains with her husband, Bill, dogs and chickens. Together they run the Dragon Wagon, a mobile children's bookstore that visits locations in their rural community and lets each visiting child choose a free new book to keep. She also enjoys gardening, walking in the woods and volunteering. That work with young readers gives a practical counterpart to her fiction: both the books and the mobile bookstore help children find an inviting way into reading, whether through a dragon they have just met or a character they already love.
