Series background & context

Tormentor Mine is one of Anna Zaires's most suspense-driven dark romance series. It opens with Dr. Sara Cobakis, a woman living a quiet suburban life, and Peter Sokolov, a Russian assassin hunting the people responsible for destroying his family. Sara begins as collateral damage in Peter's revenge quest, but the series turns on the fact that she does not stay that way for long.

Peter is one of Zaires's darkest heroes. He is brilliant, damaged, obsessive, and frighteningly focused. When he first comes into Sara's life, he is there to hurt her and use her for information. When he returns, his motives shift from vengeance to possession, and that change is what powers the rest of the series. Sara, meanwhile, is not built for Peter's world, but she is stronger than he expects, and the books get a lot of mileage out of the clash between her ordinary life and his abnormal one.

It is part revenge thriller, part obsession story.

What separates Tormentor Mine from some of Zaires's other dark romances is how much external plot it carries. There is stalking, surveillance, shifting identities, law-enforcement pressure, and an ongoing sense that Peter is both hunter and hunted. The first book is intimate and frightening, but Obsession Mine, Destiny Mine, and Forever Mine keep widening the circle, making the series feel bigger and more dangerous without losing the emotional fixation at its center.

The tone is intense, but not static. Peter can be terrifying one minute and unexpectedly tender the next, which is exactly why Sara never gets a clean, simple emotional response to him. That instability is the point. Readers are meant to feel how deeply unsafe the relationship is, and also why the connection becomes impossible for either character to dismiss.

This series also rewards readers who know Zaires's wider dark contemporary world. It connects with Twist Me and Capture Me, and later books hit harder if you already know some of the surrounding players.

If you want a dark romance with a strong suspense engine, a truly dangerous antihero, and a heroine pulled into a nightmare she cannot simply walk away from, Tormentor Mine is one of the best showcases for that side of Anna Zaires.
