Author bio
Tony Roberts is a British novelist whose work sits at the junction of action adventure, fantasy, and long-running series fiction. He is best known for continuing Casca, the historical fantasy saga about an immortal soldier, but his own shelves also include the imperial drama of Empire of Avarice, the quest-driven Dark Blade books, and the music story that starts with Siren.
He has built his career the steady way, one series at a time.
Roberts' path into Casca was unusual. In 2000 he created the official website for the series, and in 2005 he got in touch when the owners were looking for a writer to carry it on. That led to Halls of Montezuma in 2006, the first Casca novel under his name, and from there he became the writer most closely linked with the modern run of the immortal mercenary's adventures.
That beginning says a lot about him.
He came to a franchise as a reader, then stayed to do the hard work of keeping it alive. His Casca novels send the cursed soldier through very different parts of history, from the Mexican-American War in Halls of Montezuma and the American Civil War in Johnny Reb to the First Crusade in The Crusader, the fall of Constantinople in The Last Defender, Waterloo in The Iron Duke's Man, and even the war in Ukraine in The Hunter. Readers who like military action, shifting periods, and a hero who can walk into any century tend to find a lot to enjoy there.
But Roberts did not stop with inherited worlds. He also built his own fantasy settings. The Kastania books, beginning with Empire of Avarice, follow a weakening empire, the Koros family's rise, and the grind of war and court politics. The Faerowyn sequence, starting with Dark Blade, begins more intimately, with a half-dark elf trying to understand her parentage, before the story opens into larger battles over power, place, and survival.
Then there is Siren, which shows another side of his imagination. That series begins in Britain at the end of the 1970s with Katie Long, a shy, bullied girl from a musical family who dreams of becoming a rock star while dealing with illness and self-doubt. Later books such as Sirensong, Katie, and Love's Refrain turn that setup into a longer story about fame, band tension, recovery, family strain, and the stubborn work of keeping a creative life going.
Across all of these books, Roberts returns to a few clear interests. He likes characters under pressure. He likes long arcs instead of neat one-book closures. He likes systems under strain, armies, courts, families, bands, and the people trying to stay themselves inside them. Even when the setting changes completely, his stories keep circling questions of loyalty, endurance, identity, and what people become when events leave them with no easy choice.
His public biography is fairly spare, but his output is not. He has said he has been writing Casca since 2005, and his current author pages show him still publishing new Casca and Kastania books in 2026 while keeping his earlier fantasy and Siren titles in view. The picture that emerges is of a writer who likes worlds big enough to live in for years.
