Series background & context
Casca is built on one very strong hook. Casca Rufio Longinus, once a Roman soldier, is cursed with immortality after driving his spear into Jesus at the crucifixion. He cannot die in the ordinary way, he heals from wounds that should finish any other man, and he is forced to keep moving through history as a soldier while he waits for the Second Coming.
That means the series can go almost anywhere.
In Tony Roberts' books, that freedom is the whole engine of the story. One novel might drop Casca into the Mexican-American War in Halls of Montezuma. Another might send him through the American Revolution in The Minuteman, the First Crusade in The Crusader, the fall of Constantinople in The Last Defender, or the chaos of modern conflict in The Hunter. Each book has its own campaign, local allies, and local enemies, so the series keeps changing uniforms, weapons, and battlefields without losing its core character.
The setting always matters. Roberts treats each period as a different survival problem. Sometimes Casca is a hired mercenary, sometimes a regular soldier, sometimes a fugitive trying to disappear inside an army. He has to learn new tactics, navigate new politics, and work out which cause, if any, deserves his sword. That historical variety is a big part of the appeal. You are not just following one man, you are watching him test himself against century after century of war.
There is also an ongoing shadow hanging over the books. Casca is hunted again and again by the Brotherhood of the Lamb, a fanatical order that sees him as an abomination and wants to capture or destroy him. That gives the series a continuing line of tension even when the time period changes. Personal grudges matter too. A lot of the books turn on revenge, rescue, loyalty, or the protection of one vulnerable person in the middle of a much bigger conflict. Casca may be immortal, but he is rarely detached.
These are not quiet historical novels.
They are brisk, battle-heavy adventures with a fantasy edge, but they also have a melancholy streak because Casca can never really settle. He loves, loses, changes names, and marches on. If you like military fiction, historical settings, and a hero who carries the weight of two thousand years on his back, this series gives you exactly that. Tony Roberts' run works well if you want a version of Casca that keeps the old premise but pushes it across a wide stretch of history, from muskets and cavalry to tanks, civil wars, and modern firefights.
