S.R. Mallery did not take a straight road to fiction. Before settling into books, she worked across several creative worlds, as a classical and pop singer-composer, a production artist, a calligrapher, a quilt artist and teacher, and later an ESL and reading instructor. That range shows up in her fiction, which moves easily from western romance to cozy mystery to historical drama.

Writing was not the first family trade she wanted to claim. Mallery has said she came from a family of writers, and for a long time that made the whole thing feel like a little too much pressure. Then, in 2008, while waiting for her teenage daughter in a department store, she started scribbling a story inspired by the Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire. That piece became the start of her serious writing life.

She kept going.

Short stories came first. Her work appeared in magazines and journals, and the pull of history became the thread that tied everything together. Mallery has said that historical fiction, and later time travel, felt like coming home because it gave her room to do the research she loves just as much as the storytelling.

Trouble in Glamour Town shifts again, this time to 1926 Hollywood, where the shine of silent-film fame sits right next to murder and corruption.

She does not stay in one lane. In Tea, Anyone? and When In Rome, she mixes small-town murder, humor, and psychic time slips. In Hidden Spells, she brings witches, family friction, romance, and mystery into the same story. Across genres, her books tend to center people who are under pressure, often women, who have to make sense of danger, loyalty, and the stubborn weight of the past.

History matters in her books, but so do ordinary feelings.

That balance may be one reason readers have followed her across very different kinds of stories. Mallery is a USA Today bestselling author, and she has won Readers' Favorite gold medals for both anthology work and historical fiction. Still, the appeal of her fiction is less about grand gestures and more about how lived-in it feels, the family tangles, the period detail, the bits of humor, and the sense that private lives are always brushing up against bigger events.

She also keeps a history-centered blog, where she shares posts about the past along with interests like vintage culture and older films. She has referred to New Mexico as her adopted state, and that seems to suit her work, curious, eclectic, and a little hard to pin down. For Mallery, one story clearly leads to another.
