Author bio

Tom Turner did not come to crime fiction by way of writing workshops or a neat early career plan. He grew up in New England, dropped out of college, and for a stretch ran a bar in Vermont. Later he went back, finished school, and kept moving.

It was not a straight line.

After college he worked as an advertising copywriter, first in Boston and then in New York. He has said that, like a lot of copywriters, he assumed there had to be a novel somewhere inside him. At that point, though, fiction was still more idea than daily practice, and life kept pulling him in other directions.

One of those directions was real estate. Around thirty, he left advertising and later ended up in Palm Beach, buying, renovating, and selling houses. That period seems to have shaped his books in a big way. He has said that the contractors, brokers, buyers, sellers, and assorted operators he met there gave him the raw material that later fed his fiction.

Place is a big part of the appeal.

Readers usually meet Turner through Palm Beach Nasty, the first full Charlie Crawford novel. In that book, a former New York homicide detective heads south expecting a quieter life and gets dropped into a world of murder, wealth, vanity, and bad decisions. The books that follow, including Palm Beach Poison, Palm Beach Deadly, and many later Charlie Crawford stories, keep returning to that same Florida mix of private clubs, expensive houses, social ambition, and secrets that refuse to stay buried. People who like fast-moving procedurals, sharp banter, and suspects with too much money tend to settle in quickly.

He did not stop with Palm Beach. Turner later built the Charleston books around Nick Janzek, a cop starting over in South Carolina, beginning with Killing Time in Charleston. He also wrote the Savannah novels featuring PI sisters Jackie and Ryder Farrell, starting with The Savannah Madam, and added the Delray Beach story Delray Deadly. Across the different series, the pattern is easy to spot: beautiful coastal places, bruised investigators, hidden schemes, and trouble simmering behind polished doors.

He likes settings that behave like characters.

That shows up even outside the main series. Books like Broken House and Dead in the Water move away from the regular detectives, but they keep his interest in pressure, bad choices, and people who have to react fast when things go wrong. He also once spent time working for a private investigating firm in Florida, mostly on cheating spouse cases, and by his own account it was not pretty. That kind of ground-level experience helps explain why his fiction is so interested in the grubby side of rich lives.

Turner has said that when he first started writing, he leaned toward crime because he thought action helped keep the pages turning. Over time, that became less of a safety net and more of a home. These days the crime novel seems to be where he is most comfortable, whether he is writing cops, private investigators, or amateurs who get in over their heads. What readers often respond to is simple: the books move, the dialogue snaps, and the fancy settings never hide the mess underneath for long.

After living in Palm Beach, Charleston, and on Skidaway Island outside Savannah, he recently moved to Delray Beach. That feels fitting. His fiction has always liked the coast, the heat, and the uneasy mix of beauty and bad judgment. He is still writing in that lane, and he still seems to know exactly how much trouble can hide behind a nice address.
