Author bio

J.B. Turner was born in Edinburgh and still lives there. Before he turned to novels, he worked as a journalist, and that background runs through almost everything he writes. His thrillers are full of reporters, officials, leaked files, and the uneasy sense that somebody powerful is always trying to hide the real story.

That newsroom instinct matters.

Turner tends to build books around people who are good at their jobs but not especially comfortable with authority. Sometimes that means a black-ops specialist who has been told just enough to be dangerous. Sometimes it means a reporter or a detective who keeps asking questions long after common sense says stop. You can feel the reporter's eye in the way he follows money, procedure, and missing paperwork. Even when the plots move fast, the engine is usually the same, someone sees the wrong thing, or asks the wrong question, and then everything starts to come apart.

A lot of readers find him through Hard Road, the first Jon Reznick novel. It introduces a covert operative who works in the shadows, is still grieving his wife, and keeps getting pulled into missions where the official version of events makes no sense. Books like Hard Kill, Hard Wired, and Hard Vengeance expand that world, bringing in FBI assistant director Martha Meyerstein, hacker Trevelle Williams, and Reznick's daughter Lauren.

Reznick is tough, but he isn't simple.

Turner has also written outside that series without leaving his favorite territory. Miami Requiem and Dark Waters follow reporter Deborah Jones through investigations tied to corruption, violence, and political cover-ups in Florida. Rogue takes things into darker territory with Nathan Stone, a covert operative presumed dead and turned into an assassin by a secret organization. And No Way Back introduces Jack McNeal, an NYPD detective dragged into a conspiracy that reaches toward the White House.

Across those books, a few themes keep returning. Turner likes stories about loyalty, grief, revenge, state secrecy, and the mess created when official power decides the rules do not apply. He also likes damaged people who still have a line they are trying not to cross. That gives the books a grounded feel, even when the action gets big and the conspiracies start reaching across agencies and borders.

His thrillers have sold more than three million copies.

That success makes sense when you look at how much range he has inside one broad lane. He writes political thrillers, journalist-led crime stories, black-ops adventures, and detective novels, but the tone stays recognizably his, quick, tense, and interested in the human cost of hidden power. He moves easily from Florida heat to Manhattan streets to quieter overseas settings, but the focus stays close to the characters and the decisions that trap them.

Turner has said he is deeply interested in geopolitics, and that tracks with the books. So do his other enthusiasms, including music and film. He lives in Edinburgh, is married, and has two children. If you like thrillers where the institutions feel shaky and the people at the center have to improvise their way through a very bad day, J.B. Turner is very much writing in your lane.
