Series background & context
The Toad books take readers inside the life of Limpy, a young cane toad with a crook leg, a generous heart and a terrible view of human tyres. Set mostly in Queensland, the series uses slapstick adventure and gross detail to explore how animals and people clash.
In Toad Rage, Limpy can’t understand why humans seem to hate cane toads so much. Every day he sees flattened relatives on the highway outside his swamp. Convinced the problem is bad public relations, he heads off to the city – and even to the Sydney Olympics – in the hope of making cane toads popular enough to be chosen as mascots, or at least spared from squashing.
Toad Heaven finds Limpy dreaming of a safe place where no one tries to blow toads up or hit them with cricket bats. With enormous cousin Goliath beside him, he searches for a national park that might serve as a toad sanctuary. What he discovers about so‑called safe places is more complicated than he expected.
In Toad Away, Limpy becomes obsessed with the idea of peace between cane toads and humans. He decides that to fix things he needs to go back to the source – the part of the world cane toads originally came from. The journey takes him far from home and into some very strange human habitats.
Toad Surprise shifts into festive mode. Limpy learns about Christmas and decides it’s the perfect time to show humans how kind and helpful toads can be. His plan to become an unofficial Santa’s helper leads to shopping centres, chimneys and the usual near‑misses with feet and vehicles.
In Toad Delight, tourists start arriving at the swamp, filming the toads, turning them into a sideshow and, in some cases, eyeing them as a snack. Limpy and his rellies must work out whether humans can ever see them as more than pests, souvenirs or menu items.
Across all five books, Limpy’s determination never quite matches the scale of the human world he’s up against, which is where much of the comedy lies. At the same time, the series gently asks readers to think about introduced species, fear, cruelty and the possibility of changing our behaviour. This page lays out the Toad titles in order and gives you enough background to leap straight into Limpy’s adventures.
