Misery Guts

by Morris Gleitzman

1991

Series background & context

The Misery Guts books follow Keith Shipley, a kind‑hearted boy who can’t stand seeing his parents unhappy and keeps trying to fix their lives with wildly ambitious plans. The stories blend big feelings about family and money with very funny disasters.

In Misery Guts, Keith lives above his parents’ struggling fish‑and‑chip shop in grey South London. Vin and Marge hardly ever smile, worn down by long hours and mounting bills. Keith decides the problem is the weather and the dreary shop, not the economics, and starts painting everything a tropical mango colour. His attempts to cheer them up backfire in spectacular fashion, eventually helping push the family toward a fresh start in Australia.

Worry Warts picks up in their new seaside town. Australia should be paradise, but business pressure and homesickness creep back in. Convinced that wealth will solve everything, Keith drags his outspoken friend Tracey on a trip to the outback opal fields. He’s sure that if he digs up a fortune, his parents’ worries will vanish. Instead, he discovers danger, dust and the small print on what money can’t fix.

By Puppy Fat, Keith’s parents have separated and the family is scattered between London and Australia. Both adults seem stuck, out of shape and reluctant to move on. Keith becomes obsessed with transforming them into confident, date‑able people, arranging makeovers, murals and potential partners. His efforts are both cringe‑worthy and touching, and they force him to think hard about body image, ageing and what happiness really looks like.

Across the trilogy, Keith stays generous and hopeful, even when his ideas are half‑baked. The books show migration, divorce and financial stress from a child’s eye level, where optimism crashes into reality but isn’t completely crushed. On this page you’ll find the Misery Guts novels in order, brief plot outlines for each, and guidance on following Keith’s journey from smoky London streets to hot Australian sand.
