Series background & context

The Blabber Mouth series centres on Rowena Batts, a girl who can’t speak but refuses to let anyone treat her as silent. Through her letters, scribbled messages and fierce sense of humour, she pushes back against pity, embarrassment and other people’s bad decisions.

In Blabber Mouth we meet Ro as the new kid at a small Australian school. She was born with parts missing from her throat, so she communicates through writing, gestures and sign language. Her widowed dad is a country singer with a talent for public humiliation – the kind of dad who might belt out a ballad in the supermarket. Ro can handle being non‑speaking; what she finds harder is everyone assuming she’s either fragile or inspiring.

The first book follows her attempts to make friends, handle bullies and survive her father’s performances. The humour sits right alongside moments where Ro’s frustration and anger at being misunderstood are very real. She’s nobody’s victim, and part of the pleasure of the series is watching her out‑think adults who underestimate her.

Sticky Beak continues Ro’s story after her teacher, Ms Dunning, marries Ro’s dad. The new stepfamily arrangement is already complicated when Ro rescues an abused cockatoo from a local thug, bringing more chaos into the house. The book digs into jealousy, loyalty and the fear of being replaced, with Ro trying to protect both her bird and her place in the family.

In Gift of the Gab, Ro travels overseas with her dad’s band and finally has the chance to track down the mother who left when she was born. Life on the road is messy and full of misunderstandings, especially when you can’t rely on spoken words. Ro grapples with what “having a voice” really means, and whether knowing your origins always makes things easier.

Taken together, the trilogy gives a lively, honest portrait of a disabled girl whose main problem isn’t her body but other people’s assumptions. This page lays out the Blabber Mouth books in sequence and offers background so you can follow Rowena from her first nerve‑racking classroom letter to her biggest, bravest choices.
