Author bio
T.J. MacGregor was born in Caracas, Venezuela, and grew up there before her family moved to Florida. She has written for years about places where beauty and danger sit side by side, and that early split between South America and South Florida helps explain why her fiction feels both sunlit and slightly off balance.
South America never really left her.
She is bilingual, earned a B.A. in Spanish and a master's degree in library and information science, and worked a long list of jobs before fiction became her full-time life. She taught English to Cuban refugees, taught Spanish to teenagers, worked as a social worker, and served as a librarian and Spanish teacher in a correctional facility for youthful offenders. Those jobs gave her a feel for pressure, fear, bureaucracy, and the way ordinary people behave when their lives tilt sideways.
Travel mattered, too. One of the jobs she has spoken about most warmly was leading travel-writing trips in the Peruvian Amazon with her husband, writer Rob MacGregor. That kind of firsthand wandering shows up all through her books, especially the ones that move beyond Florida and into South America.
Her writing life took shape in South Florida in the early 1980s. She met Rob MacGregor while he was working as a newspaper reporter and she was teaching English as a second language to Cuban refugees. The two eventually left their jobs to try freelance writing. Money got tight, rejections piled up, and she kept going. After about a year, she sold her first novel, In Shadow. She also published under other names, including Alison Drake and Trish Janeshutz. Part of that came from practical publishing advice, her editor wanted something simpler, with initials, at a time when suspense by men was thought to sell better.
That mix of grit and weirdness became her lane.
Readers tend to find her through a few different doors. Dark Fields introduced Quin St. James and Mike McCleary, a Florida husband-and-wife investigative team moving through fast, dangerous cases. Tango Key brought in homicide detective Aline Scott and the sultry island setting MacGregor would return to again and again. The Hanged Man opened the Mira Morales books, which lean harder into psychic suspense. Then Esperanza took her interest in the uncanny into a fictional Andean city where the living and the dead are separated by a very thin border. And Out of Sight, the novel that won the Edgar Award for Best Paperback Original, shows how comfortably she blends science, mysticism, and a straight-up chase story.
Her books return to the same kinds of pressure points. Florida heat. Islands and wetlands. Family loyalties that complicate everything. Cops, private investigators, psychics, professors, and everyday people who get dragged into something much stranger than they expected. Even when she writes about invisibility, time slips, or hungry ghosts, the stories stay anchored in fear, love, survival, and the stubborn hope that truth can still be found.
Alongside the fiction, she has written many nonfiction books about astrology, tarot, dreams, synchronicity, spirit contact, and related subjects, often with Rob MacGregor. She has also taken over and continued parts of the Sydney Omarr astrology line. She lives in South Florida, and she and Rob still write, blog, and podcast about the strange side of life through The Mystical Underground.
