Quin St. James and Mike McCleary Books in Order

The Quin St. James and Mike McCleary books are MacGregor's long-running Florida crime series, and they cover a lot of territory without losing their core pair. Mike starts out as a police detective and later works as a private investigator. Quin begins as a woman caught in the aftermath of someone else's death, then becomes Mike's investigative partner, and eventually his wife. The series grows along with that relationship.

In Dark Fields, Quin is dealing with the death of her lover while Mike is chasing a killer who preys on men from singles bars. That opening tells you a lot about the books. The crimes are violent, the pressure is personal, and Quin is never treated like a bystander. She learns the work by doing it, often under terrible conditions, and her instincts matter almost as much as Mike's training.

As the novels go on, the partnership becomes the real spine of the series. Quin and Mike marry, argue, separate, reconnect, and keep taking cases. That gives the books a lived-in quality. They are not a polished puzzle-solving duo. They are a couple who carry stress home, make mistakes, protect each other badly and well, and keep choosing to stay in the fight.

Florida does not behave like background scenery here.

MacGregor uses Miami, the Everglades, Palm Beach, college towns, and Tango Key as active parts of the story. Kill Flash dives into Hollywood ego and a murder caught on tape. Death Sweet goes into a victim's buried sexual history. On Ice traps Mike inside an amnesia case with his own freedom at stake. Kin Dread turns the Everglades into a wilderness nightmare. Spree makes a college-town killer personal. Storm Surge mixes murder, covert plotting, and a hurricane. By the time you reach Blue Pearl and Mistress of the Bones, the series has learned how to use wealth, spirituality, and local history just as effectively as bloodshed.

What keeps it from feeling like straight hardboiled crime is MacGregor's taste for the uncanny. Near-death research, psychic flashes, spiritual belief, folklore, and ghosts all brush against the investigations now and then. But the books still read as mysteries first. The strange material sharpens the danger instead of replacing the detective work.

So this is a good series for readers who like 1980s and 1990s suspense that moves quickly, stays rooted in human mess, and is willing to get a little eerie around the edges. Quin and Mike are the reason to come in, and the swampy, dangerous Florida atmosphere is the reason many readers stick around.
