The Hungry Ghosts books begin with a simple question, why are two strangers heading for a place neither of them meant to visit? Tess Livingston, an FBI agent, and Ian Ritter, a journalist, both find themselves on the way to Esperanza with gaps in memory and no clear reason for the trip. That is the first sign that ordinary logic is not going to carry them very far.

Esperanza is the heart of the series. It is a fictional city high in the Ecuadorian Andes, partly in the material world and partly somewhere just beyond it. The dead can cross over there. Some of them are Chasers, beings of light who protect the living. Others are brujos, hungry ghosts who want bodies, power, and another chance at physical life. MacGregor uses it to build books that feel bigger than a normal thriller but more grounded than high fantasy. Tess and Ian are not chosen-one figures standing outside the story. They are drawn into it, changed by it, and forced to decide what they owe to each other, to the city, and to the people who depend on them. Their relationship matters a lot here. The supernatural stakes are huge, but the emotional center is personal.

In Esperanza, the city itself feels like a revelation, beautiful, dangerous, seductive, and full of unseen traffic between worlds. In Ghost Key, the unease deepens because Esperanza no longer feels stable. Parts of the city seem to be slipping away, as if the place can move in and out of reality. That gives the middle book a haunted, dreamlike pressure. Even home stops feeling secure.

By Apparition, the fight spills into Florida. Dominica, a powerful bruja, escapes Esperanza and starts building influence in a small coastal town, using fear, possession, and the restless dead to spread her reach. The move matters because it shows the evil in this series is not trapped in one magical city. It travels with grief, desire, memory, and ambition. Once the door between worlds opens, it does not politely close itself.

The tone is dark, lush, and a little feverish. There is romance here, but it does not soften the danger. There is horror here, but it is not just gore for the sake of gore. MacGregor is most interested in the border between the living and the dead, and in the cost of staying human when power is close at hand. If you like supernatural suspense with a strong sense of place and an emotional core, this trilogy gives you a lot to settle into.
