Out of Time

by Jodi Taylor

2025

In this Time Police mission, the past refuses to stay politely in its own lane. A dead dinosaur in the wrong era, rumours about Romulus, plots around the Princes in the Tower and a sickly looking time map all point to something badly wrong with history itself, and Team 236 must work out what before everything collapses.

2

Killing Time

by Jodi Taylor

2024

A ghost train lost somewhere in time would be bad enough, but Luke and Jane are trapped on board with an old enemy and a rapidly fraying partnership. As Grint and the rest of the Time Police scramble to reach them, a botched experiment back at headquarters threatens to expose secrets that should have stayed buried.

3

Santa Grint

by Jodi Taylor

2022

The Time Police decide to hold their first children's Christmas party, and Lieutenant Grint foolishly allows his softer side to get involved. Bubble universes, missing money, a toad called Mr Fluffy and an over enthusiastic colleague soon have him facing disaster on several fronts, with only his equally chaotic friends to keep him out of prison.

4

About Time

by Jodi Taylor

2022

A routine operation to arrest a minor criminal selling fake historical artefacts spirals into the worst day the Time Police have faced. An officer is attacked inside headquarters, a prisoner ends up dead and an investigation leads to places no one is supposed to go, while Team 236 is threatened with a revelation that could tear them apart.

5

Saving Time

by Jodi Taylor

2021

Now hailed as heroes and fully fledged Time Police officers, Luke, Jane and Matthew are enjoying their new status until a far more serious threat to the timeline emerges. When old connections tug them in different directions, one member of the team goes missing and another faces the end of their career before it has really begun.

6

Hard Time

by Jodi Taylor

2020

Illegal temporal tourism is booming, and the Time Police need agents who can blend in where respectable officers would stand out. Team 236 are sent undercover to infiltrate a particularly nasty operation, but between personal baggage, shifting loyalties and dangerous clients, surviving the assignment is far from guaranteed.

7

Doing Time

by Jodi Taylor

2019

Time travel nearly destroyed the world, so the Time Police were created to stop anyone from tampering with history again. Jane, Luke and Matthew are the least promising recruits in the organisation, but when a new threat looms this misfit team may be the only group reckless enough to save the future.

Series background & context

The Time Police novels take place in the same universe as the Chronicles of St Mary's but look at time travel from the other side of the law. In the far future the secret of moving through time became public and the result was chaos. People tried to fix wars, rescue loved ones or make a profit, and the timeline buckled under the strain. Out of the aftermath came a new organisation with one job, stop anyone from interfering with history ever again.

That organisation is the Time Police, a global force with immense authority, grim training facilities and a very clear view of right and wrong. On paper its officers are elite professionals who carry out precision operations to keep the timeline stable. On the page the reality is a mix of heroism, bureaucracy, internal politics and the sort of institutional stubbornness that cannot handle surprises.

At the heart of the series is Team 236, quickly nicknamed Team Weird. Jane is a rule focused recruit trying to escape a suffocating past. Luke is a disgraced aristocrat sent to the Time Police to be knocked into shape. Matthew is the nervous but brilliant son of St Mary's historians who understands the time map better than anyone realises. Between them they manage to be simultaneously the worst and the most interesting trainees the organisation has ever seen.

Across Doing Time, Hard Time, Saving Time, About Time, Killing Time and Out of Time the trio are thrown into increasingly dangerous assignments. They go undercover to break up illegal temporal tourism, chase criminals through different eras, and deal with the fallout when missions go very wrong. A ghost train lost in time, a murdered prisoner inside headquarters and threats that blur the line between past and future all push the Time Police to its limits.

The books balance action with sharp, often very dry humour. Taylor has fun with the clash between the Time Police's rigid rule book and the messy reality of the work. Commanders argue about paperwork while the universe frays at the edges, and even the most by the book officers find themselves improvising more than they would like to admit. Team 236's relationships evolve as they move from unwanted recruits to a unit other people quietly rely on.

Readers familiar with St Mary's will spot crossovers and shared references, but the Time Police books are designed to stand on their own. They offer a stricter, more procedural view of time travel that still leaves plenty of room for slapstick, moral dilemmas and a surprising amount of heart. If you have ever wondered how St Mary's looks to the people tasked with keeping order, this is where you find out.
